Austin Outfitters: An Interview with Matt Shoberg

With its growing portfolio of high-end houses in and around Austin, Shoberg Homes has established itself as one of the city’s foremost custom builders.

Case Study: A Tale of Two Time Periods

The aesthetic pleasure of the house comes chiefly from the collisions, the combinations, and the at times almost imperceptible blending of the two environments—the old staircase, reinvented as a smooth white spiral, stands in sharp contrast to the rigid steel frame of the new glazed façade just a few feet away, while the intimate recesses and courtyards of the extension come as a striking transition after the subdued grandeur of the central house. From the exterior, the two volumes make for an unlikely yet complementary pairing, beckoning the visitor onward to discover the surprises within.

The Architect Issue

Rollingwood offers tree-filled, yet urban views close to the heart of the city, making it one of the most attractive neighborhoods in Austin. When a young family purchased a lot on top of a steep hill with magnificent downtown views of Austin’s skyline in 2014, they hired LaRue Architects to design their new home.

“This house is so, so good,” said one of our judges. “It’s effortless inside and out.” Or seemingly so, because as all architects know, it takes a great deal of heavy lifting to achieve that effortless look in a house—especially a large house in an urban setting.

Majestic Hillside Home with Sleek Details Overlooks Texas Hill Country

Ryan Street & Associates in collaboration with Shoberg Homes has designed this majestic hillside home, located in Westlake Hills, a suburb of Austin, Texas. This hillside property in an Austin suburb was virtually unbuildable, inspiring an exercise in constraint. The architects offset the dramatic vertical drop-off with an emphasis on horizontal lines — a cantilevered feature, a bridged entry, and reaching planks of blonde wood. Encompassing 4,783 square feet of living space, there are five bedrooms and five bathrooms with two half bathrooms.

A Contemporary Austin Residence Makes Way for Art

Not quite 30 years ago, a couple on a ski trip to Santa Fe found themselves spending more time on Canyon Road (the city’s renowned gallery district) than on the slopes. During that time, they purchased their first artwork together–a painting entitled A Total Boar–which now hangs in their Austin home’s lower entry, where they see it daily and it still extracts a chuckle.

A Rustic Texas Home Embraces Its Natural Setting

In the cooler autumn months, Matt and Paige Shoberg and their young sons enjoy the open and airy space overlooking the swimming pool and spa behind their home in West Lake Hills, Texas. Furman + Keil Architects completely reimagined the residence with a new plaster skin and two new additions. “It’s so peaceful,” explains the busy mother. “I don’t get a lot of peace.”

Leap of Faith

Armed with expertise and experience in home renovations, builder Matt Shoberg and his wife, Paige, don’t shy away from a challenge – which is the reason they saw potential in the traditional 1990s red-brick abode they purchased in West Lake Hills.

Making A House A Home

A house may be made of brick and mortar, but a home is created with care and attention to detail. The word “homes” in the name “Shoberg Homes” is a fitting one. Matt and Paige Miller Shoberg are Austin-based custom homebuilders whose main emphasis is on high-end homes.

Modern By Design

For the past decade, Shoberg Homes has distinguished itself as one of Austin’s premier custom builders by treating each high-end residential project as if it were its own. That axiom took on new meaning when company president Matt Shoberg and wife Paige embarked on their own dream project, a sprawling estate on a prominent but challenging corner lot.

Westlake Drive House by James D. LaRue Architects

Located on the 12th fairway of a west Austin golf course, this sleek house sits snug into the steep hillside showing off an impressive, hill country contemporary physique to the commuters above and golfers below. Its one-story street profile camouflages its size and complexity while the low-pitched roofs and clean horizontal lines cause the structure to seamlessly blend into the surrounding environment.

An Oasis for Entertaining

When these Westlake homeowners decided they wanted to build their house flush with the green of Austin Country Club, it certainly wasn’t for convenience’s sake. In fact, 16 feet of land stood between them and their ground-level view of the 12th hole. Three months and an intricate retaining wall later, Matt Shoberg and his crew were ready to begin construction.
